Building Momentum
Taking Last Year’s Success in the New Year
As the curtain closes on 2024, the Associated Builders and Contractors of Southeastern Michigan has much to reflect on and celebrate. This year marked a period of growth, innovation and resilience within the construction industry, as our members navigated challenges and embraced opportunities with the determination and ingenuity that define our region’s builders.
The continued growth in skilled trades training called on the organization to introduce a new campus, which launched in February. The Westland campus successfully welcomed over 100 new apprentices in the fall, addressing critical gaps in the labor force. The implementation of how apprentices learn, offering immersive, hands-on experiences, boosted safety awareness and efficiency on job sites.
In the legislative arena, 2024 was a year of significant election victories for ABC. Several candidates running for the Michigan State House and for U.S. Congress won in their districts allowing for a merit shop majority at both the State and Federal level. ABC Southeastern Michigan’s advocacy efforts ensured that these opportunities aligned with merit-based contracting principles, leveling the playing field for member contractors of all sizes. In the State Legislature, Democrats controlled the Michigan governorship, the State House and the State Senate the last two years. The only one of those up for election in 2024 was the State House. Republicans won back the House, 58–52, providing cover against a progressive majority that over turned Right-to-Work laws and threatened to enact a bevy of pro-union policies including project labor agreements, and ratios on plumbers and electricians. ABC ran paid advertising in the 27th, 44th, 46th, 54th, and 55th, successfully winning each of those seats. By maintaining a strong voice in Lansing, the organization will begin the fight once again for the interests of its members while promoting a competitive and fair construction market.
Beyond building structures, ABC Southeastern Michigan strengthened its community ties in 2024. Throughout the year, ABC SEMI hosted safety training sessions, networking events and community gatherings, such as Safety Academy, the annual Christmas Party and ever-popular Wild Game Dinner. These events emphasized safety, collaboration, and community engagement, fostering stronger ties among members and the broader community. These initiatives not only strengthened ABC SEMI’s role in the construction industry but also deepened its engagement with the southeastern Michigan community, helping to build a more skilled and connected workforce.
As we move into 2025, the foundation laid in 2024 promises continued growth and innovation. With plans to expand apprenticeship programs, deepen commitments to the industry and champion policies that benefit our industry, ABC Southeastern Michigan is poised to build on its successes. To our members, partners, and the communities we serve: thank you for making 2024 a year to remember. Together, we’re not just building projects—we’re building a stronger future for Southeastern Michigan.
