Building Foundations of Success
How PCS Global Transforms Construction Culture
Before he was Dr. John, a young man set off in search of education to pursue an enriched life. Fascinated with psychology, John Mlinarcik enrolled at Miami University in Ohio for his bachelor’s degree. Four years later, he continued towards a master’s degree, then another master’s degree at Central Michigan University focused on clinical study.
Mlinarcik became Dr. John after years of hard work and in 1977, opened PCS, or Professional Counseling Services, which today includes counseling and consulting.
“I’ve lived a life dedicated to helping others grow and it turns around and inspires me to grow. It’s a cycle and it’s helped me develop a new way we can evaluate our personalities, and therefore evaluate our behaviors and the choices we make that affect those behaviors,” Mlinarcik said. “Since I’ve developed this new personality assessment, I’m more driven than ever to share this with the world.”
Dr. John came up with the idea of the Behavioral Styles Profile. Inspired by a model used in training 500,000 individuals from 47 states and within 14 countries, the BSP provides information on behavioral patterns in daily living and in stressful moments. These results help explain some of the methods used in advanced team building.
“When teams utilize the BSP, we can find a methodology, or a ‘wire frame’ that can help build a culture and change the way in which the team sees and responds to stressors in the workplace,” Mlinarcik said. “This particularly impacts those working on job sites where there’s a greater risk for danger.”
According to Dr. John and his colleagues, companies that have coupled leadership training with the BSP, allow the group to create a common language, understand one another better and talk so others hear them better.
Shereen Sater, the COO of the consulting side of PCS, says their leadership development sessions center on three stages.
“We use the Me, We, Us approach in our sessions so we can first focus on self-awareness and our blind spots as leaders, then we move into the team approach and how multiple personalities work together, and then we work on overall company culture,” Sater said. “When we factor in the BSP assessment, each individual sees their level of aware ness, which shows agency to change and control our responses.”
Sater continued saying their leadership development helps those top performers who have been, or will be, promoted within the company, but have little management skills. She mentioned that even learning basic skills such as how leaders talk and how their team hears them, can have a profound impact on how successful the team operates.
A career-long advocate for helping people, Dr. John helped form MAAP, the Michigan Association of Professional Psychologists at age 29 to oppose the licensing changes for masters and PhD levels. He believes the more people that can help empower leaders and company culture, the more job satisfaction employees will have.
“When top-performers plateau, they’ll go,” Sater said. “It’s important employers provide continuous opportunities for growth and that’s where we can help them.”
